Claiming Council Tax Support
We are currently experiencing high volumes of applications for Council Tax Support (CTS). Please help us to manage these as quickly as possible by reading the notes below before you start this form. You might not need to use this form.
- MAKING A NEW CLAIM FOR UNIVERSAL CREDIT?
If you make a new claim Universal Credit (UC) as a result of a drop income, you will be asked as part of your UC claim if you want to claim CTS. Please state you do, when you are asked. The UC service centres will automatically tell us about your claim for CTS and we will contact you directly. You do not need to fill in this form to claim CTS if you tell UC service that you want to claim CTS.
If you are already on UC and your income has reduced, you should report this to the UC service via your UC journal AND email Merton with the details at housing.benefits@merton.gov.uk . UC will tell us if your UC reduces. You do not need to fill in this form to tell us your UC has changed.
If you are not going to claim UC but still need help to pay your Coucil Tax, you should fill in this form.
Claiming Housing Benefit
- CAN YOU CLAIM HOUSING BENEFIT?
Housing Benefit (HB) is only available to people living in certain types of accomodation (temporary accommodation and supported accommodation). Most people will need to claim Universal Credit (UC). If you need help to pay your rent, please claim at GOV.UK/Universal-Credit instead. You will be asked as part of your UC claim if you want to claim CTS. If you are liable to pay Council Tax, please state you do, when you are asked. The UC service centres will automatically tell us about your claim for CTS and we will contact you directly. There is no need to fill in this form to claim CTS if you tell UC service that you want to claim CTS.
- ARE YOU ALREADY GETTING HOUSING BENEFIT?
If you are already on HB and you have a reduction in income, you should notify us by email of the change. You should seek advice about whether to claim UC to help pay for your day to day expenses at GOV.UK/Universal-credit You should not fill in this form to tell us your income has changed.
Please only use this form if you live in London Borough of Merton. If you live in another Local Authority area you should claim from the Local Authority where you live.
